The English Premier League Transfer Window is now closed for the summer, and clubs now have to live with their market decisions. 2025 summer saw clubs in the league spend a record total of £3.19bn on new signings, eclipsing the previous record of £2.46bn set in the summer of 2023.

The 2025 summer saw a flurry of market activity, with every club taking definite steps to fill squad holes and raise the overall quality of the team, and many of them hitting a record high number of trades for one window (504 total player movements) in the process. The betting markets have also adjusted to reflect the expected impact of the signings, as you will see when you try sports betting at GG.BET to test how good your football knowledge is.

How Significant is a Transfer

Football is a team sport, and so individual players have roles in the team and squad, all of which contribute to how the team performs on every match day and at the end of the season. Hence, it is not enough to buy quality in one or two positions and hope for them to bear the slack of the rest of the team in other positions.

Clubs that do not stack a baseline quality of starters and backups in every role will suffer at the hands of opponents, and depending on the size of the club, such complacency would also impact their ambitions negatively.

Common examples of this include:

  • Arsenal’s failure to sign a goalscoring force since the exit of Aubameyang in 2022 cost them three opportunities to win the league, coming agonisingly close in 2023 and 2024, before being blown away by Liverpool in 2025, as they came second for three successive seasons. This summer, they have tried to rectify it by signing Viktor Gyokeres, and also snapped up Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace to fix their left-sided attack dynamics that had been dead since Granit Xhaka’s exit in 2023.
  • Manchester City’s failure to refresh their aging midfield in 2024 caused a massive fall away in the 2024/2025 season, as they were outmuscled and outrun by many teams that they would have normally blown out of the water. They have tried to rectify it by signing Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki this past window.

However, you should know that the connections between a transfer and the final position of a team are not always linear, since numerous factors, ranging from injuries and suspensions to intangibles like how well they connect with their teammates on the pitch, can also affect the team.

A good example would be reigning champions Liverpool, who were already strong going into week 1 of the new season, yet nobody was expecting them to run away with the title, considering that Arsenal and Manchester City had also strengthened well in the offseason. However, after finally completing the acquisition of Alexander Isak on deadline day, their fans are surely dreaming of a repeat, even if they will deny it in the early season.

Yet, the transfer window is usually a good predictor of how well a team will do in the season.

How New Signings Impact Betting Markets

Football betting markets are influenced by collective actions. That is, a club’s or player’s probable fortunes are affected by the actions of the other teams in the competition. The markets most affected by new transfers include:

  • Outright Bets

These include bets like:

  • The Title Race: The current favorites for the title would be Liverpool, thanks to the Isak signing, but bookies would not rule out a Manchester City chase, if they can get their new midfield to work early enough, nor will anyone count Arsenal out, especially if they can create the right dynamics for Gyokeres—after all he has been the most prolific striker in Europe over the past two seasons.
  • Relegation Battles: For the past two seasons in a row, all newly promoted teams were relegated, so Burnley, Leeds, and Sunderland would be high on the odds to go down at the end of the season. However, don’t rule out a surprise resilience from one of the new guys this season, as they all have brought on quality and begun the new season much better than the guys from the previous seasons. Also, factor in the fact that some Premier League mainstays have not done so well to shore up quality this summer, one of which is West Ham.
  • Player Bets

Player bets include awards that players can win at the end of the season based on their performances. These include:

  • Golden Boot: Mohamed Salah won the Golden Boot last year. This year’s race would be even more heated as he would be alongside last season’s runner-up, Alexander Isak,  while regular contender Erling Haaland and Arsenal’s new boy, Viktor Gyokeres, would also be gunning for that award at the end of the season.
  • Golden Glove: Aaron Ramsdale was famed as the guy who had been relegated with two clubs in his past. Then he joined Arsenal in the 2022 summer, and competed for the Golden Glove award, by simply playing with better quality of defensive players and system. In the same way, Manchester City have just signed Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG. He was the best goalkeeper in Europe last season, and he should give back-to-back winner of the award, David Raya, a run for his money this season.
